Praying Our Goodbyes – November 1, 4:00 pm   1 comment

A lovely tradition at St. Michael and All Angels that I inherited when I began as Minister of Music in 2014 is called Praying Our Goodbyes. During a special afternoon Eucharist service, the congregation is invited to remember those who they have lost over the past year, and the names of those who are known to us will be read aloud. Some of the great comfort of this service comes from the participation of our choir, who this year will be taking on works that are both new to them and challenging.
The Funeral Ikos by John Tavener (1944-2013) is based on the Eastern Orthodox tradition. “The Souls of the Righteous,” a duet by James Nares, an 18th Century organist at York Minster, and later organist to King George III. The Scottish Farewell paid tribute to their departing Kings, and a piece for cello and organ by local composer Craig Phillips, written in memory of his brother, are a few of the things you can hear. If you wish to honor a loved one, this meaningful service would be a wonderful event to attend.
